Gifted students (grades 4-12) are those who perform (or show the potential to perform) at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of the same age, experience, or environment. With abilities significantly above the norm for their age/grade, these students require extra support and have different academic needs than their peers.
Gifted identification includes a combination of formal measures, informal measures, and objective-based eligibility criteria (per Kentucky regulation 704 KAR 3:285). A minimum of three pieces of evidence must be utilized in the nomination process, including but not limited to:

9th stanine (96th percentile or higher) on full scale comprehensive test of intellectual ability (for general intellectual) (CogAt test administered to all 4th, 6th, and 9th graders)

9th stanine (96th percentile or higher) on a subject area of an achievement test (for specific academic) (ITBS test administered to all 4th, 6th, and 9th graders)

Other assessments that support the nomination (ie, STAR test, ACT, Torrance test, etc.)

Work samples/ portfolios/ resumes/ auditions/ etc. for non-assessed areas (creative/divergent thinking/ visual and performing arts)

Evidence of leadership in class, in one or more community activities, and in one or more student organizations (leadership)
